For the aspiring phlebotomist who is either a new student or someone who is currently working in the medical field getting a phlebotomy certification online could be for you. Most online programs have programs for new students and people within the medical field with 6 months of employment. The courses may differ in some cases. In the state of California for instance, in some cases you are eligible to skip the basic phlebotomy course if you have 6 months of work experience within the medical field. Online courses in most cases require lab work prerequisites and online classroom work.
Who Is Eligible For Phlebotomy Certification Online?
- A student who is interested in becoming a Limited Phlebotomy Technician (LPT) and has completed successfully at least 25 dermal punctures. Upon successful completion, the student must then provide a certificate or letter signed by a licensed MD, PA, RN, CLB or CLS stating completion of 25 successful skin punctures while on the job. No National Certification Examination is required to become a LPT.
- The student who has worked in the medical field for less than 6 months with the goal of becoming a Certified Phlebotomy Technician. This course must be taken in conjunction with Advanced Phlebotomy and you must be able to provide documented proof of clinical experience in order to qualify to take the National Phlebotomy Certification Examination. Also, a statement of phlebotomy experience signed by an MD or Laboratory Director stating successful completion of 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures will be required by the state of California for licensure.
- The student who has worked in the medical field for more than 6 months with the goal of becoming a Certified Phlebotomy Technician. This course does not in most cases have to be taken in conjunction with Basic Phlebotomy in order to qualify to take the National Phlebotomy Certification Examination (if you have 6+ months experience), however it is highly recommended that proof of clinical experience be provided. Also, it requires a statement of phlebotomy experience signed by an MD or Laboratory Director stating successful completion of 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures will be required by the state of California for licensure.
The Benefits Of Online Classes
There are many pros and cons to phlebotomy certification online. It is not for everyone. Taking an online phlebotomy course is not different than any other education online in terms of the online learning environment. Classes and testing is very similar. In my own experience I did better in a classroom environment. On the flip side, I have many colleagues who have had wonderful experiences online and would highly recommend it. So that being said, when deciding if getting a phlebotomy certification online is for you, be sure to think about whether it is an environment that brings out the best in you. Remember this is the beginning of a new career and setting yourself up for success is essential.
Traditional vs Online Phlebotomy Certification
The online education arena has grown substantially over the past years and is growing every day. As it grows so does the confidence in which these schools are seen. As long as they are accredited schools there is no difference in the training and you will be as ready as the person who got certified in a classroom. Employers and certifying agencies see the phlebotomy certification not whether you were in a classroom taking a test or at a computer. Hopefully this will help you decide if getting a phlebotomy certification online is for you.
